First Snow
We had a week of little snow falls last week and we scrambled to get ready for winter. Our log lengths finally arrived just in time for Superstorm Sandy and I feared they would get covered in silt again but we didn’t get any wind or rain and I bucked up the 2.5 cords in two days and wheelbarrowed them to their new home beneath the maples.
Feast of the Ancestors
We celebrated our feats of the Ancestors on Sunday the 4th of November. Jakobi was afraid the ancestors would hide in our outhouse and we reassured her the ancestors were not out to harm or haunt us. Colleen made her Pineapple Jello mold,the Travis Sweet and Sour Cabbage and the Kutin Dressing. This is how we celebrate Samahin or Halloween. Ambiana and I went trick or treating in Montpelier and to pacify Jakobi Colleen said she’s take her to the McClanes but they weren’t home and she ended up going all the wat down Eagle Ledge Road and meeting all our neighbors who were so excited to have trick or treaters. They were all ready with candy even though they get only one or two knocks on the door.Next year we are all staying in Worcester and trick or treating with our neighbors.
We wrote down what we wanted to leave behind with the old year and burnt it in the stove.
Then we headed outside to light the pumpkins to guide the ancestors home and Colleen read us the story of Demeter and Persephone.
Construction Update
The building site is all tucked in for the winter. I bought a 50′ x 30′ tarp on E-bay to cover it.
I built a heater for the Hydro Dump Load as our outdoor hot water heater will freeze. I bought for heating resistors and wired them together and built a frame out of a 2 x 4 from our big white pine and put this grill left behind by Tim, the previous owner. Our hydro power has been running at 175 watts since the beginning of October andour batteries have been at 100% since then as well so this puts out noticable heat, hopefully enough to keep the cabin up a few degrees as the fire gets low overnight.
