4th of July

The Parade

Finally after 2 years of Covid Cancellations Worcester was able to gather together to celebrate the 4th of July. We call it Town Day as the whole town descends on the Ladd Field to hang out and celebrate. Kicking things off at 11am was the parade which was 3 times as large as the last parade held in 2019. Folks were excited to get out and participate and parade down Rt 12 to the Ladd Field.

Our neighbor Jordon pulled a small lawnmower touting his Grandpa’s Small Engine Repair Shop on Eagle Ledge Rd

I am usually on the Historical Society float but this year wanted to watch rather than march. After the parade there was food and games and socializing on the Ladd Field. The Historical Society was open for those interested in Worcester’s 219 years of history.

The Ice Cream Social

At 1:30pm we headed to the Methodist Church for the ice cream social. YUM!

Worcester Voices

At 4pm the Historical Society held it’s Worcester Voices presentation of Brothers Four and More. Brothers Four and More takes place in the late 1860’s at the Richardson homestead, which was settled at the end of Minister Brook Road by John and Lydia Richardson in 1846. John and Lydia’s sons, Alonzo, Joel, Calvin and Plummer assist their father in the woods and on the farm when they can. The four are part of a close-knit family and like most siblings they spend a lot of time teasing and badgering one another.

Three of the brothers saw action in the Union Army during the Civil War which is the topic of the friendly argument over who had it the hardest. Civil War nurse Harriet Hinkson Holmes, who served at Montpelier’s Sloan Hospital comes to visit their mother and points out how hard her situation was as a nurse. Then they anticipate the arrival of Kate Hutchinson who is still mourning the death of her son, little Willie. And finally, the refelct on the death of Captain Edward Hall, who lost his life in the Battle of Cedar Creek.

I gave voice to Captain Edward Hall while three of the Richardson sons were portrayed by the Great Grandsons of Plummer Richardson.

The Fireworks

After the Worcester Voices presentation we hung out at the Ladd Field where there was more food, a country band and lots of people and kids hanging about and enjoying the late afternoon sunshine. When dusk came it was time for the fireworks which are always the best fireworks ever as they are shot off 100 yards away and explode directly overhead.

Elsewhere in July

Tami left on Thursday July 1st, riding down to Boston with me in the FTY truck to spend a few days in Boston with a friend before flying back to Montana for the 4th.

Summer evenings are the best on our land with the golden hour light saturating our homestead. After the sun goes down the fireflies come out their lights dancing to the peeping of the frogs in the pond.

fireflies & fireworks

Our friend Corinna gave us a pasta roller ad Ambiana and I made pasta from scratch for dinner last Friday. It was surprisingly easy; just 2 cups of flour, 2 eggs a dash of salt and half a tablespoon of oil. Then you roll it out run it through the pasta rollers a few times and finally through the fettuccini attachment. It cooks in 3 minutes and is the best pasta I’ve ever eaten. We are NEVER buying pasta again!

YUM!
