On Friday Colleen and I drove North to the Champlain Islands and went on a fossil walk .
The rock was a coral reef over 450 million years ago in the Ordovician Age and contained the fossilized remains of cephalopods, stromatolites and sponges.
We visited Fisk Quarry as well which also contained fossils half a billion years old.
The Shrine of St Anne
Before getting to the fossils we stopped at the Shrine of St Anne dedicated to the spot where the French built a fort in 1666 to lay claim to the land, protect the fur trade access and convert the indigenous people to the white man’s religion.
It seems insane that this is what is held sacred rather than the immense depth of time preserved in the fossils testifying to what a wonder our planet and our lives encompass.
White man carves the rock in his image showing no awareness of what is truly sacred.
Dinner with Ambiana at UVM
After fossils we headed to UVM where it was Parent’s weekend and met up with Ambiana and her friends for a yummy dinner in her dining hall.
“Translations” at Vermont Stage

Then we headed to the Main Street Landing and the Vermont Stage for the Irish play “Translations” which had a very good 1st act and a bewildering 2nd act. Nice space though, great set and fine actors.
Apple Picking at Peck Orchard in E. Montpelier
On Sunday we went to Peck orchard for apples and cider donuts. Our September has been spectacular with dry sunny skies and temps in the 70’s.
Construction Update: Hot Tub 3.0
I filled the hot tub on Saturday and it held water! So I fired up the stove at 4pm and it was HOT by 7:45PM. So nice to have a soak. After dinner Colleen, Jakobi. Gaelen and Heather all had a soak. It did spring a leak but not enough to have to constantly top up the tub like 3 years ago. In the morning it had only gone down by 1.5″ so I calculate the rate of leakage as about 3/4″ every 6 hours which if it remains constant is in the parameters of success. What happened 3 years ago is that when I filled the cube a second time the rate of leakage was way greater than the initial leaking rendering the tub a failure so I am hoping after I drain the tub and refill it for the next soak the rate of leakage will not have changed. The tub was still hot at 10am Sunday and I had a nice second soak after my Sunday run.
