On Friday we made our annual fall pilgrimage to the Great Vermont Corn Maze in Danville. Due to Covid we had to make reservations in advance and weekends were sold out so we settled on a Friday slot at 11:40am. It was raining after a summer of drought and there were maybe 5 cars in the parking lot. In years past we go on glorious sunny fall foilage weekends and the place is packed.
This year we only saw 3 other groups the whole time we were in the maze. We quickly found the boat…
…and the 1st Bell of Frustration but spent an hour wandering around in the first part of the maze around the picnic green.
This year, again due to Covid they did not have punch stations to mark your progress through the maze but rather had letters to write down on the card. We liked this better as less litter, no fighting over who punches their card first, in fact we had only 1 card between the four of us and Colleen the score keeper kept it. We also liked posing with the first letter of our first names!
We got a simple nudge from the cor ranger which got us out of the first part of the maze and we quickly crossed a small bridge which took us to the tunnel but again we wandered in circles for awhile and eventually found the 2nd Bell of frustration.
After we found Colleen’s letter we compared notes with another couple and made our way across both bridges…we were making progress.
Jakobi loves the dinosaurs and we figured out that we needed not to cross the big bridge but to go beneath it. Jakobi found the path that led to it and soon,,,
We were at the BELL OF SUCCESS!!!
We did it, it took us 2 hours 58 minutes and 14.58 seconds. Not our best time but since we did not get any major clues we concluded it was our best year yet. We also loved the cool misty rain and clouds which made the fall foilage pop plus the emptyness of the maze were we seldom saw anyone. NO kids at all. The other groups were a big group of Grad Students from UVM, A young umbrella weilding couple and 4 older ladies. And we beat them all out…we think, the ladies might have made it out before us…..
firewood
I finished up our firewood the earliest ever on Sunday Oct 4th thanks to our logger friend Holly. I borrowed her splitter on Saturday to split the unsplittable wood and Sunday I stacked it! I think we have almost seven cord and we use maybe 3 over the course of a winter!!!!
Tree House Update:
The tree house is almost ready for its floor coat of polyurethane. This weekend I hooked up the gas line (1/2″ black pipe connected to a 100# tank) and cut the vent to sit flush with the exterior wall and secured with 3 screws through the vent cap.
Levi’s 10th B-Day Party
Jakobi’s friend Levi turns 10 this week and he had his party on Sunday afternoon. Christine made pizza and cake and it was a boy fest with several dads hanging out. It was a beautiful day and nice to be out and social and celebrating Levi’s Birth!
