Grace Potter & The Fair

On Friday September 15th we went to the Shelburne Museum to see a Grace Potter show. We used to go to the Shelburne Museum when Ambiana and Jakobi were young and I have been wanting to see born in Vermonter Grace Potter for a very long time. She was touring in support of her new album “Mother Road”.

We picnicked in the grassy parking lot and enjoyed a beautiful sunset. This is the 3rd concert this summer I have gone to with a different member of the family.

The stage was at the bottom of a gentle hill; most people were sitting in chairs that they brought. It was no problem to get up close to the front of the stage. We circled the venue checking out all the food, beverage and commercial tents and trucks. Lots of kids as anyone under 12 is free! The opening act was a rocker in the mold of Ben Harper and his best number was when he duetted with Grace Potter on a soul song midway through her set.

Grace Potter was in full MOTHER ROAD mode, the stage all Southwestern desert Rt 66 themed with cactus and gas pump cut outs and lots of neon. Grace herself emerged in character arriving on the stage with a small suitcase. She can sing and her lead guitarist is amazing, they jammed out soaringly on several tunes. The band was as I thought they would be but I was a little underwhelmed by Grace Potter herself; mostly that she was inhabiting her “Mother Road” persona. Maybe this is her Musical; the album that will become her Off Broadway show ala Anais Mitchell and “Hadestown”. It was still a great show, fun to dance to though no part of the crowd that we could see was in full on dance party mode. We had fun. I’d see her again just for the guitar player”

Tunbridge World’s Fair

On Sunday Jakobi was bored and wanted to go somewhere with us. It reminded Colleen and me of the before-Bobi-times when it was just us and Ya-ya and we would go places together as a threesome family. Well we are back to those days except it is not 2 year old Ya-ya but teenage Jakobi.

Jakobi suggested apple picking but we have plenty of those on our land so I countered with the Tunbridge World’s Fair which we haven’t gone to in like eight years except for Jakobi who went two years ago with Flora. It was a nice day for the hour drive South to Royalton and Tunbridge and we spent a few hours walking the midway people watching and checking out the cos and the pigs and the sheep and the chickens and the rabbits between bites of fair food; Jakobi had a salted pretzel, Colleen and Creeme and me: fried dough smothered in Nutella!

The best part was the part we never got to see before because it was not something the kids were into and even though Jakobi was still not into it we spent time in the old fashioned life village and watched people working the way they did 100 years ago. I especially liked this log splitter as I had just finished bringing in the Winter wood with the use of our neighbor’s log splitter and it was cool to see what a large machine it started out as before the advent of hydrolics.
