On Friday Colleen and I along with our friend Mark Powell drove East to Gilford NH for the Outlaw Music Festival at the Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion. Dylan pulled out 3 weeks ago which made me almost not want to go but I am glad we did as it was an awesome concert.
We arrived at 2pm when the camping lots opened. Yes camping! The venue has a campground which is awesome as we did not have to spend an hour in the parking lot traffic after the show and could just crawl into our tent and go to sleep. I brought the Ooni Pizza Oven and we baked 5 pizzas and handed out slices to the people around us in the parking lot. It was a lot of fun.
The Venue is much better than the one in Mansfield where we saw Neil Young in May. It is smaller, not laid out in a semi-circle and the sound and views were much better. We missed the opening band but caught Dylan’s replacement; Charley Crockett who was totally Country and had a great band to whom Colleen and I two stepped along. John Cougar Mellencamp was next and he played a great show. His band was tight and all the songs were hits. He opened with a new one from his latest album and then went right into “Paper and Fire”. During an acoustic “Jack & Diane” he stopped when the crowd started singing the chorus a verse early and admonished the crowd in a light hearted way and then resumed the 2nd verse. The highlight was “Check It Out” with howling guitars and fiddle. He played “Smalltown”, “Pink Houses” and closed with “Hurts So Good”.
Willie Nelson was next. I didn’t have any expectations and he was phenomenal. First of all he is 93 years old and can still play a real fine guitar and his voice sounds great. His band was awesome; his guitar player sang lead on a couple of songs and the harmonica player stood in for a lead guitar and was simply incredible. I know more songs than I thought I would and thoroughly enjoyed his set. He played for 75 minutes which is alright for a 93 year old man.
