Maine Coastal Hike

Day 5, 6 & 7

I left Six Flags at 6pm and drove East and North through Masachusetts and NH into Maine taking thruways the entire way. I drove til about 11pm and then pulled over at a rest stop and slept in the back of the truck on the cushion from my deck lounge. It was an awesome sleep with rain on the cap. I got up around 7am and drove the remaining 3 hours to Cutler Maine and the Coastal Trail in a drizzly rain. In the parking lot I organized my pack, made breakfast and then hung out waiting for the rain to pass which the forecast said would be around 11am. Right on cue the sun came out and I shouldered my pack and hiked the short 1.4 miles to the Atlantic Coast.

It was stunning! I then followed blue blazes south along the coast past several small bays….

A small pebble beach along the way

It was another short hike, 1.4 miles to the beach at Black Rock Point where I camped for 2 nights. There was one other fellow camping there and lots of day hikers passing through.

My water source. I filtered it but it was vivid green with Tannic Acid. I called it “Spruce Tea”

I cooked with my wood burning firebox which worked excellent and is here shown making a quesadilla!

I spent the rest of the day on the beach watching the tide come in. The beach is on the Bay of Fundy which has 40ft tides so this was pretty dramatic watching the water rise at night and recede the next day.

I spent the next morning hiking back up the trail with my binoculars hoping to have breakfast at a little beach I passed the day before but it was inaccessible. I hung out at scenic viewpoints glassing the sea for whales. I never saw any but spied 2 sea lions, a pod of dolphins, lots of birds and lobster boats pulling up their traps.

On the third day of this trip I headed south to Fairy Head which was only 2 miles away.

The path through the woods was full of rock staircases and mossy forest.

At the one mile mark I came upon another campsite at Long Beach which had a beautiful small pebble bay with easy access to the water. I had to go in because it was the ocean and managed 2 dunks before the cold drove me back onto the warm rocks of the beach.

After a few hours I hiked the last mile along the rocky shore to one of the campsites at Fairy Head.

I set up camp on a bluff overlooking the sea and just as I finished the fog came in.

It was a beautiful spot all mysterious with the fog and I hoped that the fog would recede at sunset but it never did and during the night it began to rain. My plan was to get up at sunrise, pack up and hike out. At 5:30am it was still raining; pouring in fact, I packed up in the rain and hit the soggy waterlogged trail hiking 5 miles in ankle deep water at times though the forest back to my truck which I reached at 8:45am and changed into dry clothes and hit the road for the Kancamagus Highway in NH
