Jr Iron Chef Vermont 2022

Practice

Jakobi was recruited by her former homeschool group to compete as part of the homeschool group in the Jr. Iron Chef Competition. Last weekend she got together with Isla and Sage to practice their dish, a Three Sister Stew with Corn Tortilla

While she practiced with her mates Ambiana, Colleen and I got the bikes out of the shed where the chickens have been using them to roost, cleaned them off and biked a 7 mile there and back to the Susan and Curtis Falls.

We haven’t been there in many years and forgot how beautiful it is and made a vow to return in Summer and swim in the pool at the base of it on a hot summer’s day

The Competition

The Jr Iron Chef competition was on Saturday April 2nd at the Champlain Valley Exposition Center in Essex. There were about 20 middle and high school teams all of whom had 90 minutes to completely make their dish.

Our gals looked spiffy in the chef’s uniforms, most teams had elaborate hats and chef’s wear. It was fun to wander and see what everyone was cooking. My favorite was a high school team making ravioli and it inspired me to find a pasta roller and make our own pasta from scratch.

The girls finished with time to spare and plated up eight samples for the judges along with a presentation plate.

Although their entry looked delicious it failed to take any of the 3 awards as the judges thought it a bit bland and in need of a sauce. They did get commended on their teamwork and in having the cleanest work space.

FTY happenings

At Farmers To You we continue to lose long standing employees. The latest to leave is Yarrow our customer service/pick lead for the last 10 years. She like Kuenzi is heading off to pursue new dreams. In her case starting a granola bar company!!!!

Down in Boston the site host team gathered to launch a new promotion. From L to R is Lucia: Returns, Sarah: Promotions, John: Site Host Husband, Greg: FTY Founder and Amelia: Site Host

on the homestead…

The snow is making a rapid retreat. Jakobi and I hiked the short distance up the creek to Little Hobie Falls.

It is Maple Sugaring time. We have 9 buckets on 9 trees and are boiling sap to make syrup.

VAN MORRISON

Colleen and I got tickets to go see Van Morrison in Boston in September. I have been listening to his live albums lately. The 4 disc set of the shows that his 1974 live album “Too Late To Stop Now” is phenomenal.

Van was doing something with live shows that no one else with the exception of the Grateful dead were doing. Invoking the yarragh, letting the music take him to an unknown space and seeing what comes through. Van finds musicians who are into the quest as he is and trusts them to follow their instincts and allow the song to flow through them.

“Live At The Grand Opera House Belfast” is another awesome chronicle of where these explorations lead and the music that comes forth from them. I am hoping that is the Van Morrison who shows up in September.
