Covid19: week 10

Amazing how normal this new world of social distancing, masks and sheltering in place has become. I must admit, from what I gather listening to the news, NPR and reading articles, that my experience of Covid19 has been very different from most people. I did not lose my job nor my income, with 10 acres, a pond and a mountain sheltering in place is not a hardship, and being naturally a hermit home body the world has now become a bit more like me. Vermont is opening back up slowly, gatherings of 10 or less are permitted, Retail opens on Monday, play-dates are allowed and plans are in the works to open up daycare and summer camps by mid-June. On Monday we had what we hope is our last snowfall. It interrupted a family game of Cranium as saucer size snow flakes began falling from the sky. Jakobi, Ambiana and I rushed out on the deck to catch some on our face as they were too big to catch in our open mouths.

New Chicks

On Thursday we welcomed 8 new chicks into a newly renovated and weasel proofed chicken coop. They got a 100W bulb to keep them warm and hydro power to keep it lit.

Xander

The girls name them all except for one which by tradition I name after a Red Sox player. This year let me introduce to you Xander Bogarts.

Spring Tasks

With Spring comes the shoveling out of the compost bin to be spread on our berry and fruit trees. This pile took a year to accumulate and then another year to turn into compost.

The path of the sun changes with the season and with leaves soon to sprout ( they are a bit late this year as last week was super cold for May) I moved the solar panels to their Summer spot.

A first for us, we are getting in our wood before September. Our neighbor Holly is culling her forest and is selling me log lengths. I went up to her place on Friday and bucked some up and filled the back of the pick up and spent Sunday morning splitting the rounds by hand. I figure this is 1/2 a cord and we need about 3 to be stocked for next winter so 5 my trips. The plan is to be done with wood by July and leave September and October open to something new.

Silas, Winslow & Hazel

I drive into full on Spring every Thursday as my work takes me down to Boston. It was in the 70’s last Thursday and I ditched the full body suit as I almost passed out it was so hot in it. The highlight of the day was at the Arlington pick up site when A.J. brought Hazel, Winslow and Silas in the bike to pick up their order. It had been almost 3 months since I had seen them and I was missing them. They are always so excited to get in the truck with me and push around totes and milk-crates. Looking forward to the day they can join me again in the truck.
