A Trip to the Volcano!

On Saturday we drove up to Volcano National Park. The crater was emitting a high level of sulphur fumes and the Crater Rim Drive was closed so we watched a few films in the visitor center and worked on our Jr. Ranger badges. We took a side trip to the Lava Tube and here we are posed at the trailhead.

The lava tube was a sweet hike into a snakelike cave. At the end of the lighted path Gaelen and I took our flashlights and explored the 1/2 mile extension that is not lit. It was really cool to be underneath the earth and Gaelen really enjoyed it, even crawling the final 20 yards to touch the end of the tube.

We did get to take a look out over Kiluea Crater...

...and here Colleen works with Gaelen & Ambiana on their Jr. Ranger Booklet.

Back at the Visitor Center Gaelen & Ambiana take their oath and receive their Jr. Ranger Badges!!! We stopped again at Punalu'u Beach on our way home and met Ben & Laurel there as we want to hit the ocean everyday of Gaelen and Gamm's stay!

South Point

On Sunday we headed down to South Point and found a nice place for the Keiki (kids) to swim at a boat ramp. Unfortunately there was no shade and it was super sunny and hot so we did not stay long. Here we are enjoying a hike along the coast.
