Forty years ago today I threw a water balloon at my sister Katie, when she tried to retaliate I sought shelter in the house. My brother Chuck, who was applying KISS make up to his face came out and restrained me on the porch. Not wanting to get wet I hit him on the arm. He looked me in the eye and said Don’t ever hit me again then promptly retreated into the house. When I tried to follow him he slammed the door on me and my arm went through one of the 6 panes of glass. The door was slammed so hard it bounced back off the jamb and a sliver of glass tore into my arm and sliced it open. Blood everywhere. 911 was called and the siren went off in our small town and the driveway began to fill up with volunteer firemen. Chuck had immediately grabbed my arm and staunched the bleeding so there was nothing for them to do as they did not want to risk blood loss if chuck relaxed his grip so we all waited around for the ambulance to take me to the hospital. Luckily I had not severed and artery and I waited around in the ER for surgery. Next to me a man had lost 3 finger sticking his hand into a lawnmower. As he was wheeled past me he looked at my upraised sliced open arm and asked what happened to me. Put it through a window I told him. That wa smart he said. Smarter than sticking my hand in a lawnmower I responded before he was whisked away. In surgery they re-attached two tendons that I had severed and stitched me up with 68 stitches and put my arm in a soft cast. I have a slight limitation of movement in my pinky and ring finger and a beautiful scar that has now been with me for 40 years.
