Weekend on Cape Cod

My sister Katie and her Bob invited us over a month ago to join them on the Cape for a weekend of camping on the 3 day weekend celebrated this past week. We arranged for Gaelen to be with us and on Saturday drove 1st to Erving to pick him up and then to Brewster on Cape Cod to camp in Nickerson State Park. We had a nice wooded campsite and made a nice fire both nights which we gathered around for s'mores, warmth and conversation.

The weather could not have been better and though I had scoffed when Gaelen said he wanted to bring his bathing suit he surprised me by donning it both days and frolicking the first day in the pond and the second in the sea.

Ambiana insisted we strap the canoe to the roof and bring it and on Sunday we launched it out on Cliff Pond. Cousin Maya came with us, Gaelen opted to stay behind with Katie and Bob. The pond was glass smooth and we glided effortlessly across it. We saw a bluer heron than the one who frequents our pond back up in Vermont. We saw loons and fishermen and fish and a hawk, kayakers and a flock of geese and Ambiana and Maya amused themselves silly with a rhyming game.We stopped at Gamma's on the way back on Monday to pick up more of our stuff including the calendar schedule and a bike form Katie's and then drove home listening to the Red Sox lose Game 4 of the ALCS to the Rays :(

Leaves are fallin all around, it's time i'm on my way or so sing Led Zep but this fall we are staying put, at least within a 300 mile radius. Ambiana has been checking out autumn themed books from the library and we got to act one of them out this past week by raking up a big pile of leaves and JUMPING!!! in them!

The autumn colors have peaked and lots of leaves are on the ground. The ones still on the trees are deep orange, bright yellow and stand out bodly among the pine shrouded hills.

We have finished uncovering the garden and have mulched it with hay from the side of the road cut down by county mowing. While moving the straw Colleen found a dead mouse and a bit later 3 tiny baby mice, Ambiana was fascinated and wanted to hold one. I thought briefly about rescuing and raising them but we thought it better to return them to the hay to give their momma a chance to retrieve them if she is not the dead mouse we found.
