GALLIUM

Gallium (Ga), with an atomic weight of 69.72 and a density of 5.90 g/cm³, is a silvery metal in a solid state at room temperature. Discovered in 1875 by French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, Gallium's name derives from the Latin word "Gallia," meaning France. Though relatively rare in nature, it is found in ores like zinc and bauxite and constitutes 0.00182% of the Earth's crust. Gallium is present in trace amounts in the human body, but it is not considered essential.

Gallium’s true potential wasn’t realized until the 1960s and 1970s, when its ability to emit light when exposed to an electric current led to the development of LED technology. This discovery revolutionized lighting, and Gallium quickly became integral in various fields, from home lighting to high-tech devices like smartphones and laptops. Gallium’s ability to wet glass and skin adds to its usefulness in semiconductors and LEDs. Its unique properties include a melting point just above room temperature, around 86°F, allowing it to melt in the hand, and it has the longest liquid range of any element, from 85.57°F to 3999.2°F.
