ARGON
Argon (Ar), atomic number 18, is a noble gas created in stars through nucleosynthesis. It forms in the heart of red giant stars and during supernova explosions. Once created, Argon travels through space and eventually finds its place in Earth's atmosphere, where it constitutes around 0.93% of the air. Argon’s key property is its inertness—it does not react easily with other elements, making it valuable in various industrial and scientific applications.
Argon plays an essential role in industries such as welding, where it acts as a shielding gas to prevent contamination during the process, ensuring high-quality, clean welds. It is also used in lighting technologies like fluorescent tubes and gas discharge lamps. In analytical chemistry, Argon serves as a carrier gas in gas chromatography and a detector gas in mass spectrometry. Additionally, Argon is used in medical applications, such as cryosurgery to destroy abnormal tissues and in Argon lasers for eye surgeries.
In the Universe, Argon is found in trace amounts, making up about 0.00015% of elemental abundance. It is produced through the decay of radioactive potassium-40 in stars. On Earth, it is the third most abundant gas in the atmosphere. However, in the human body, Argon is present only in trace amounts, less than 0.001% of the total body composition.
